Banner in hand, Sophie hurried home to get the cake and flowers. Everything was coming together! She daydreamed about how it would all look. The red balloons. The yellow cake. The blue napkins. The purple flowers.

Oh no! Not pink. Purple!

All of a sudden, Sophie knew. She was supposed to get purple flowers! She regretted not writing everything down, as Clara had suggested. It was just too many colors to keep track of!

Sophie was more than halfway home. She stood frozen on the path, not sure which way to go. Turn back to town? Was there time to get to the florist for purple flowers? Or continue home, and at least bring Clara the cake and banner? Sophie looked up at the sun. What time was it? Clara was counting on her.

Sophie’s stomach was in knots!

Just ahead was the turnoff to Hattie’s house. Maybe she’d know what to do. Sophie scurried along the path. Before long, she came to the stream bank and Hattie’s house. Half of it was built into the bank. Half of it floated on the water.
